Position Sizing for Crypto Scalpers

6 min readUpdated Dec 2025

Scalping is fast. Small mistakes compound quickly. The best scalpers keep risk per trade low and treat fees as a major cost.

Use smaller risk per trade

A swing trader might risk 1-2%. A scalper often risks 0.25-0.75%. Smaller risk helps survive streaks.

Account for fees and spread

Scalping targets are small, so fees and spread matter. Tight stops plus fees can flip edge negative.

Keep leverage lower than you think

High leverage increases liquidation risk and pressure. Most scalpers perform best with modest leverage and precise entries.

Example: Risk 0.5% on a $5,000 account = $25 risk. If stop distance is 0.6%, position size is about $4,167 notional.

Scalping checklist

  • Risk less than 1% per trade.
  • Use realistic stops that fit the asset range.
  • Prefer limit orders to reduce fees.
  • Stop trading after a daily loss limit.

Managing a scalping session

Set a daily loss limit before you start (e.g., 3% of account). After hitting this limit, stop trading regardless of how you feel. Also set a daily profit target — when reached, reduce size or stop entirely. Track your session metrics: number of trades, win rate, average R/R, and total fees paid. This data helps you optimize your approach over time. The best scalpers treat each session like a business shift with clear start and end rules.

Scalping is a volume game. Consistent sizing and disciplined exits keep you alive. Use the calculator to size quickly and avoid manual errors.

Scalping Position Size FAQ

What is the ideal risk per trade for scalping?▼
Most successful scalpers risk 0.25% to 0.75% per trade. Since scalpers take many trades per session, smaller risk prevents a losing streak from causing significant damage. Some ultra-high-frequency scalpers risk as little as 0.1% per trade.
Should scalpers use market or limit orders?▼
Both have their place. Use limit orders for planned entries to save on fees. Use market orders for urgent exits when price moves against you. Many scalpers use limit for entry and market for stop loss execution.
How does fee impact scalping profitability?▼
Fees are the biggest hidden cost in scalping. A 0.1% round-trip fee on a 0.3% target means fees consume one-third of your profit. Switching from taker to maker orders can double net profitability for scalpers.
What leverage is best for scalping?▼
Most scalpers use 5x-20x leverage. This provides enough amplification for small moves while keeping liquidation at a safe distance. Avoid 50x+ for scalping as normal volatility can trigger liquidation even on winning setups.
