Frequently Asked Questions

What is a funding rate?

A funding rate is a periodic payment mechanism that keeps perpetual futures contract prices aligned with the spot market. When the funding rate is positive, long traders pay short traders. When negative, short traders pay long traders. On Bybit, funding payments occur every 8 hours.

How is the funding rate calculated?

The funding payment is calculated as: Position Size × Funding Rate. For example, if you hold a $10,000 long position and the funding rate is 0.01%, you pay 1 USDT every 8 hours. The annualized rate is calculated as funding rate × 3 (payments per day) × 365 days.

What does a high funding rate mean?

A high positive funding rate indicates excessive long positioning in the market — traders are overwhelmingly bullish. This creates a cost for long holders. Extremely high funding rates often signal over-leveraged markets and increase the risk of a price correction or liquidation cascade.

How can I use funding rates in my trading strategy?

Funding rates serve as a market sentiment gauge. Extremely high positive rates can signal an upcoming correction, while deeply negative rates may indicate a potential bottom. Traders also use "funding rate arbitrage" — buying spot and shorting perpetual futures — to earn funding income with minimal directional risk.
